THE STORY SPACE
The Silverstone Experience is a brand new family attraction that takes visitors on an interactive journey through the past, present and future of British motor racing. This £20m project, supported by a £9.1m grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, resulted in the rescue and refurbishment of a Second World War Wellington Bomber Hangar from Silverstone’s days as a training facility for the RAF. At the entrance of the Silverstone Circuit resides the restored former hangar, where housed within and split across two levels, are dynamic interactives that lead the visitor through themed spaces and animated narratives layered with echoes of motor racing's past. The experience also has the addition of a new build atrium and archive centre to one end.
THE STORY NARRATIVE
With the mission to ‘engage minds through motorsport’, this exhilarating exhibition tells fascinating stories of human endeavour, great sporting rivalries and engineering innovation using state of the art interactive displays, iconic film and archival imagery.
THE STORY ENGINEERING
The Starting Grid sets the scene for the fast-paced journey ahead, where visitors become immediately immersed within the thrilling pre-show. Dramatic large scale blended projection and reverberating sounds of motor racing is enhanced by subwoofers, which create a powerful and impactful first impression from the outset.
Travelling through the introduction grid and beyond, the exhibition is packed with interactives that invite audience participation and encourage a deeper connectivity and understanding of the past 70 years of racing history. As visitors navigate their way through dynamic setworks, original kit and machines are brought to life using touchscreens, audio chronicles and archive footage of bygone eras.
This unique exhibition was designed by Mather and Co. whose aim was to inform, entertain, educate and inspire. Sysco also worked with digital media designers Ay-Pe, the results of which are an impressive display of synchronised content that perfectly aligns with the project ambition. Although challenges arose during the home straight of the project due to the building contractors going into administration, Sysco persisted to drive forward the audiovisual exhibits as much as possible to minimise delays to the project programme and AV hardware integration.
The diverse scope of audiovisual elements and interactive exhibits, perfectly complement the energetic nature of this exhibition to deliver a truly captivating, impactful and memorable visitor experience.
